How to pack correctly the furniture, motorbikes and vehicles in general

Packing of furniture for the transport (for D.I.Y. removals)

For D.I.Y. removals you need to pack the furniture; this is without doubt the most difficult thing to do.

Before disassembling the furniture, you may need to make a sketch on a piece of paper in order to remember the position of something, to note the exact position of doors, drawers and shelves; most of the time, if you change the position of something, it doesn’t fit well. You have to gather screws and hardware in different boxes (one for each piece of furniture).

Put a blanket or a cardboard between the doors, sides and any components of furniture that you place side by side, unless your parts aren’t perfectly smooth. In this case you can put them directly in contact.
Generally you have to put raw side to raw side and good side to good side. For example, a door has a raw side (where there are hinges) and a good side (the side normally seen when the door is closed). To put four doors on the van proceed as follows:

• Lean the raw side of the first door to the wall of the van (it would be better to put a piece of cardboard between the wall and the door)
• If the good side of the door is perfectly smooth, you can lean the good side of the next door on it without putting anything in between; if not, put in a piece of cardboard.
• Between the raw side of the second door and the raw side of the next door, put a blanket or a cardboard. If not, the door may be damaged by the small movements and vibration during the transport. Anyway, only the raw sides of the doors will be damaged.
• When you have finished the packing of the door, fasten them by tying a rope around the middle. Now the doors are correctly packed.

During the transport, you must place the long pieces vertically and fasten them firmly to the wall of the van. Unskilled people tend to place the pieces horizontally so to lose most of the load capacity of the van. Place the refrigerator vertically too.

If you transport assembled cupboards or chest of drawers, be careful to fasten doors and drawers with tape so to avoid their opening.

In general, be careful to protect with a blanket or a piece of cardboard the good sides of the furniture and fasten them with a rope during the transport.

Packing and transport of motorcycles

Usually motorcycles are loaded last, without packing, by protecting them with a blanket. If you have to load an expensive motorcycle, or simply you don’t want to damage its fairing, reserve room for the motorcycle and fasten it with belts at the strongest points, so to keep it vertical during the transport.
Disassemble trunks and windscreens, so to avoid any damage and don’t waste room. Usually it is advisable to empty the tank of the motorcycle, so to avoid fuel discharge during the trasnport.

Transport of cars and vehicles

If you do the removal by yourself and you have more than one car to transport, you have to ask someone for a hand.
If you decided to entrust your removal to a company, notify them of the problem when you ask for an estimate; usually the pool of movers is 4-5 people so it will not be a problem to entrust the transport to them, since they all have to move to the new house and usually they have only one or two vehicles.
