If you don't have enough time to read everything, here's the summary

The removal should be arranged several weeks before to reduce the work during the days of the task. Unless you have decided to do it by yourself the first thing to do is to ask a company for an estimate.

Book the removal al least two months in advance to be sure of having availability. If you book your removal late, you may find availability problems and higher prices, especially during the busiest months (usually May, June and July, depending by the country).

Sometimes the companies provide the equipment you need (boxes, packing tape, air bubble tape); it's advisable to check it when you ask them for an estimate. Be sure that the company has an insurance coverage (usually noted in the contract) and they use external lifts, unless you are on the ground or first floor. If they use some external lifts and they want to set the lift in the street, ask the company to get the permission of the necessary authority to occupy the public land.

You must notify your transfer to the companies that provide water, electricity, gas, telephone. Notify your transfer to the post office too, in order to deliver your post to the new home. If you change town, inform the registry office and ask them if there is anything else to be done.
About a month before the removal begin to pack the less useful belongings like most of the books, glassware, dishes and useless clothes. Be careful to put the air bubble tape between all the pieces of glass or pottery in order not to damage them. If you haven't enough boxes, ask your company for more.
It's advisable to write on the tape what it contains, because once arrived in the new house you'll find anything you need without loosing time. Store in the last boxes the most useful things and write accurately on the packing tape what they contain.
Put the medicines in separate boxes and carry them with you the day of the removal. Write carefully what they contain and keep them away from children.
Fix an appointment with the plumber late on the removal day or on the day after; the gas connection for boilers, ovens, etc must be done by authorized companies.

Two weeks before the removal, begin to use up your deep-frozen foods; they wouldn't last for the length of the removal. Three-four days before the removal, it's advisable to start using up all the foods stored inside your refrigerator; next, clean it carefully and arrange it for the transport.
Remember to dismantle the satellite dish. If you have children arrange their minders. Make one or two copies of the new house keys.

The day of the removal, when you leave the old home, remember to switch off the main electric switch, close the gas and read the meters.
In the new house, open first the boxes containing the most useful things and store them immediately. If you have packed plants, remember to open them first!
