What you need
If you are going to entrust your removal to a company, they often provide you all the packing supplies you need; be aware that usually the packing boxes are recycled, so it's possible you find some used supplies. It doesn't matter, just check they are clean.
If you have decided to perform the removal by yourself, you can purchase the packing supplies at some wholesaler's. You need:
How and what to pack
The packing boxes are usually provided folded; to make a
strong box, cross the edges in the bottom of the box and apply the
packing tape.
If the packing boxes are recycled, put inside a piece of bubble tape,
so as to increase the hygiene and protect your objects from shocks as
well.
The weight of the boxes mustn't exceed 20 kg for normative reasons and in order to move them more easily. Be aware that books are very heavy, so you can easily exceed this limit even by packing a few.
Packing the objects room by room will make your work faster and easier.
Dishes, glasses, coffee-cups and all the fragile objects must be separated by a paper of pluriball. Put the plain dishes in the bottom of the box and glasses on the top.
The box must be closed by joining the edges with the packing tape. It's advisable to write on the tape (not on the box) what it contains, because once arrived in the new house you'll find anything you need without loosing time. Writing on the tape allows the recycling of the box and avoids confusion with any other writing.
Computers and electronic devices must be disconnected and packed; if the connections are not so easy to remember, it's better to make a sketch of them.
You must write on the boxes that mustn't be overturned (for examples boxes containing liquids o delicate devices) "this way up", on the tape and on the edge of the box too. Recipients containing liquids must be closed very carefully; if overturned, they may cause serious damage to the furniture or other materials.
Emergency kits, medicines and valuables
Store indispensable and urgent objects in the last boxes, and write carefully what they contain; they will be your emergency kit.
Put the medicines in separate boxes and carry them with you the day of the removal. Write carefully what they contain. For medicines that require low temperatures, you need a portable refrigerator. It will keep the temperature controlled, even if outside is very hot. Keep the medicines away from children.
Don't store inflammable, explosive or corrosive materials in boxes and keep them under control during the removal. If possible, transport them separately from the boxes.
Store the important documents, valuables and money in a separate box and always keep an eye on it the day of the removal.
If you have decided to perform the removal by yourself, you have to pack the furniture too; if not, we can start to think about children and removals.
